What is the FLAMES Calculator?
The FLAMES calculator is an online version of the classic FLAMES game — a beloved childhood pastime played by millions of students around the world. FLAMES is an acronym that stands for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, and Siblings. Each letter represents a potential relationship outcome between two people.
Traditionally played with pen and paper during school, the game involves writing two names, crossing out shared letters, and using the remaining letter count to eliminate letters from FLAMES one by one. Our free FLAMES calculator online automates the entire process so you get your result instantly!

How Does the FLAMES Calculator Work?
Our FLAMES name calculator follows the exact algorithm used in the traditional pen-and-paper game:
- Enter two names — your name and the other person's name.
- Cancel common letters — any letter that appears in both names gets crossed out (one pair at a time).
- Count remaining letters — total the uncrossed letters from both names combined.
- Eliminate from FLAMES — starting at F, count to the Nth position and remove that letter. Continue counting from the next letter, skipping eliminated ones, until one letter remains.
- Your result — the surviving letter reveals your relationship!
Example: Emily + Jake
Emily has 5 letters (E, M, I, L, Y) and Jake has 4 letters (J, A, K, E). The letter E appears in both, so one E is crossed out from each name. Remaining: M, I, L, Y from Emily + J, A, K from Jake = 7 letters. The game then counts 7 through F→L→A→M→E→S repeatedly until one letter stands — giving the final result!

Frequently Asked Questions
What does FLAMES stand for?
+
FLAMES stands for Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, and Siblings. Each letter represents one of six possible relationship outcomes between two people in the classic FLAMES game.
How does the FLAMES calculator work?
+
The calculator crosses out letters that appear in both names (one matching pair at a time), counts the remaining uncrossed letters, then uses that count to eliminate letters from F-L-A-M-E-S one by one. The last letter left is your result.
Is the FLAMES game accurate?
+
FLAMES is purely for fun and entertainment — it is not a scientific relationship predictor! The results depend on the letters in your names, so enjoy it as a lighthearted game with friends, not a serious forecast.
Does capitalisation affect the FLAMES result?
+
No — our FLAMES calculator automatically converts all letters to lowercase before processing, so "Emily" and "emily" give exactly the same result. Spaces and special characters are also ignored.
Does the order of names matter in FLAMES?
+
Yes, it can! Because letter cancellation processes left-to-right through Name 1 against Name 2, swapping the names can sometimes produce a different result. Try both orders for extra fun!
What if the result is Enemies?
+
Don't panic! Getting Enemies (E) just means the letters in your names happened to land on that result. Real relationships are far more complex than a letter game — and many great love stories started with a bit of friction!
